Why Botswana is different to every other safari

Botswana is the ultimate test for any self-driver. It is where you find the highest density of wildlife in Africa, but the terrain makes you earn every sighting. This 12-day route takes you through the heart of the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. You will tackle deep sand tracks through the Mopane woodlands and maneuver around seasonal flooding. Unlike the paved roads found elsewhere, Botswana requires serious 4x4 experience and a dry-season-only commitment. You’ll be sleeping in unfenced camps where the elephants walk through at night and the sound of lions is your evening soundtrack. It’s raw, it’s challenging, and it is the most rewarding way to see the continent's last true wilderness.

12 days across Botswana

Days 1–3 — Kasane → Chobe River

Collect your fully equipped 4x4 in Kasane. Head straight into the Chobe Riverfront area. This is elephant country—nowhere else has this many. Spend three nights camping along the river where the sunsets are world-class.

Days 4–5 — Chobe → Savuti

Transition into the interior. Savuti is legendary for its predator activity and the marsh that attracts massive herds. The sand gets deep here, requiring low-range gears and steady momentum across the open plains.

Days 6–8 — Savuti → Khwai

Drive south to the Khwai Community Area on the edge of the Moremi Game Reserve. This is one of the best places in Africa to find African Wild Dogs and leopards. Three nights to explore the river loops and forest tracks.

Days 9–10 — Moremi (Third Bridge)

Deep into the Okavango Delta. You will cross log bridges and navigate water crossings to reach Third Bridge or Xakanaxa. These are the most remote camps in the country, surrounded by lagoons and high-density game.

Day 11 — Moremi → Maun

A slow exit through the buffalo fence towards Maun. This is the safari capital of Botswana. Grab a shower, restock supplies, and perhaps take a scenic flight over the Delta to see the scale of the water system from above.

Day 12 — Maun → Departure

Final gear check and vehicle return at the Maun airport branch. Share your stories and photos before catching your flight home or continuing your journey towards the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans.

Extension — Makgadikgadi

Optional add-on: head east to the salt pans for a surreal landscape of white crust and ancient baobabs under the stars.

The plan. The gear. The drive.
